Humble Beginnings

Paw-01.png

Lockdown gave us plenty of time to reflect upon what was important and spend lots of time together with our wonderful dog… Sir Woofy Woofington (of which you’ll hear a lot more about later.)

Always a beer lover, Stewart has made it his life’s work to try as many different beers as he can. With an impressive historical record on Untapped a love or beer metamorphosed into an interest in the brewing process, the science of flavours and how to produce the perfect craft pint.

It started as most do with a home brew kit, an airing cupboard and rather conveniently, a downstairs bathroom. Over time the kit expanded and with the purchase of our first Grainfather … the spare bedroom brewery was born. Out went the bed, in went a fermenter, a Grainfather and a Glycol chiller which hummed incessantly and from which shone out a very bright blue light.

Brewing days involved filling the Grainfather via a hose through the bedroom window over the kitchen flat roof below, incredibly careful sparging to avoid spillages on the carpet and lots and lots of running up and down the narrow twisting stairs of a little Cotswold cottage. The evenings were then spent hosing down the kit and cleaning it on the front lawn.

Meanwhile the branding was being born. Stewart’s white and tan boxer dog Sunny, had become affectionately known as Woofy, or Sir Woofy Woofington (due to his superior tastes). Over time Sunny started to respond to ‘Woofy’ and in the long days of lockdown the trio of Stewart, Imogen and Woofy hatched a plan.

On a little trip over to Chipping Campden in a brief lockdown thaw, over a coffee Sir Woofy Woofingtons was born as a company and we registered it there and then.

Not a graphic designer, Imogen took to Canva to create our very first labels and Woofy’s Brewery was born. Woofy was now our muse.

Our first beer to be perfected was Woofy’s Session IPA.

The Expansion

The Expansion
Paw-01.png

In 2021 we moved with our brewing dreams to the beautiful Herefordshire countryside and a hamlet called Strangford. In our first week, whilst walking Woofy we met Mark ‘Sparky’ the farmer. In conversation Imogen asked if there were any buildings available to rent as we were looking for somewhere to expand our brewery. The following day Mark told us that he might have somewhere, and to come and look (there and then!) The door of the old dairy was opened… we looked at each other and knew it was perfect!

So now we had an amazing space, ideal with its concrete slopping floor and drains, and a ledge along which the cows would strand… perfect for fermenters. All we needed now was proper kit! As Mark and Adrian got to work adding in commercial electrics and water supplies, Stewart ordered the Brewing system and Fermenters from Germany.

Enter Jack Hollington talented graphic designer and Maddy Oliver. Chatting about the branding, Jack offered to mock up some labels for Imogen based on the idea of Woofy’s face and a few weeks later the brilliant image of Woofy you now see on our labels was born as well as the bespoke Woofy’s font which characterises our brand today.

Meanwhile Maddy fresh from university started on setting up our social media channels, creating content and setting up our payments systems. The Woofy’s Collective was born!

Jack's Inspiration and Creative Process

Creative Process

Designing the logo, mascot, and labels for Woofy's Brewery was a fun and rewarding project. The logo has a vintage style with rustic typography that captures the countryside aesthetic. At the centre of it all is Sir Woofy Woofington, a boxer dog who symbolizes the brewery's dedication to quality and craftsmanship with his dignified look that also adds a classic touch to the brand.

The beer labels each have their own unique twist, featuring Sir Woofy Woofington in different hats and with various icons that reflect the personality of each brew. These designs not only showcase the distinct character of each beer but also tie back to the brewery's roots. Overall, the logo, mascot, and labels blend tradition and craftsmanship, inviting everyone to enjoy the flavours and stories in every bottle.

How we name our beers?

Naming of Beers
Paw-01.png

Who is Imogen?

Why is Brian Mild?

Where is Adrian’s ginger cake?

Who has Sparky’s Wit?

And why is Kathryn Red?

We love making beers for people. It’s all about having the person you are making it for at the very heart of the brew, then making it with quality ingredients, huge amounts or care and lots of precision. So we do just that - we find out the flavours or style of beer a person loves and we craft something just for them … and hopefully lots of other like minded people will love it too. Our trusty Grainfather is our trial kit and normally makes 66 bottles, we then share lots of samples, gather the feedback, tweak the recipe and try again. Sometimes we hit the jackpot straightaway and other times refinement is needed.

Take Hello My Name is Imogen, Imogen is the co founder with Stewart. With her Czech heritage Imogen loved a Pilsner style lager, fuller flavoured than a euro larger but not with too much fizz… Hello My Name is Imogen was born and has gone on to be our best seller!
